The Inevitability of Authenticity

Summary

Over the past few years I’ve accidentally found portals to authenticity. Passing through each portal (portals being jobs, people I meet, situations I find myself in that force me to get closer to who I am)my professional life is never the same. My piece is a narrative of various events in which I get closer to my personal brand of truth, values, and passion through an almost paradoxical medium of corporate America.

Marketing: What's Love Got To Do With It

Summary

Fragmented media, fragmented audiences, fragmented attention, fragmented worldviews. With alarming frequency, business folks will find their trusty mental phrasebooks yield no discernible translations in speaking in the tongue of their customers, colleagues, and industry peers.

Drawing on the kaleidoscope richness of psychologist Clare Graves work and Don Beck and Christopher Cowan's Spiral Dynamics (TM) model, essayist Evelyn Rodriguez applies their worldview research to media and marketing. Yet their model of the evolution of human sense-making frameworks - while immensely valuable - assumes that conceptual empathy is our only hope for communication.

Yet, global brands resonate and reverbate at a fundamental human frequency that transcends mere concepts and beliefs. Even Eskimos understand Hamlet, underscores poet professor Leonard Wolf. The essay also provides guidance on how, as innovators and marketers, we flex our empathetic muscles beyond the limitations of conceptual empathy.

Biography

Jeremy Wright is a serial entrepreneur, some have even said a blogpreneur for his focus on communications-oriented ventures. He has been involved in IT, programming and the business side of IT for nearly a decade. He is the author of Blog Marketing, a business book on blogging and writes Ensight, a popular business and technology blog. Jeremy consults on blogging, communication, IT and time management. He is the father of two boys, Evan and Alex, and a semi decent husband to Shannon.

Writing & Consulting

In October of 2004, writing became one of my primary means of income. I regularly write articles, book contributions, product reviews, white papers and courseware for a variety of companies (including Fortune 500s). While my goal with writing was initially to become a freelance writer on a variety of topics, it quickly became clear that writing and consulting went hand-in-hand. As a result, consulting on business, communications, IT, blogging and time management also make up a significant portion of my income. I also blog. A lot. I can’t say I’m an expert so much as a loudmouth on a number of subjects, as I’ve helped hundreds of bloggers start up, and it’s a rewarding experience I wouldn’t trade for anything but chocolate.

Work Is Broken: Here's How We Fix It

Summary

Meetings, presentations, and e-mail are a part of many people’s work day. Used effectively, each can help keep teams aligned, impart important information, and move projects forward. We now are bombarded with information from the web, blogs, wikis, intranets, search engines, and other digital sources in addition to paper. We’re challenged to develop and maintain a system for collecting, processing, and acting on all of this information. And the classic techniques we’ve relied on in the past have either ceased to be effective or have simply broken. In this essay, I’ll share some proven techniques for fixing what’s been broken.

Simple Ideas, Lightly Held

Summary

Way too many organisational guides trade in complicated rules for dealing with uncertainty. None of them capture the real mystery of what it is to grow something new. It’s a bit like putting up an elaborate rococo trellis and not noticing that instead of a Russian vine, someone’s planted potatos.

In “Simple Ideas, Lightly Held” I suggest some simple practices that allow groups of people to make the most of a complex world, instead of making life, and organisations, complicated and rigid.

Passion and Entrepreneurship

Summary

Say the word entrepreneur, and the notion of passion inevitably follows close on its heels. The word immediately brings to mind someone so over-the-moon on fire about what they’re doing that they can’t sit still. Passion is the essence of the entrepreneurial spirit. It is an entrepreneur’s fuel, providing the drive and inspiration to create something out of nothing, enduring all the risks, uncertainty and bumps in the road that that entails.

This chapter takes a look at the role passion plays in entrepreneurial success and offers ideas on consciously leveraging the energy that passion brings with it.
